Zoom Thru Time and Space

Interior Slum Apartment. Day.

A pair of tattooed adult male hands cracks open a bottle of E&J brandy. The bottle which is upright swings upside down. The bronze liquid gurgles downward through the bottle into a scarred throat. The scarred throat has a dotted line tattooed into it with the crude words written under it. They read “Cut Here.” The bottle slams down on a table full of drug paraphernalia.

Cut to/

A boy, six years old, sits criss-cross applesauce on the kitchen floor right next to a cat litter box filled with cat turds. There are open, half full garbage bags on the floor near him. Broken glass and beer cans are littered across the kitchen. Each of the boy’s hands holds a drumstick. They are propped on each knee pointing upward like antlers. His eyes remain in a vacant 1000 yard stare. He is listening to the sounds in the next room of the tattooed adult male and a woman who just arrived at the apartment. A screen door slams.

Off Stage, the audience hears:

Female voice: Oh you’re drinking again.

Male voice: You’re goddamn right. Where the fuck you been, whore?

Female voice: Out! I’ve been out. Sucking dicks! Getting money! Give me that goddamn pipe!

Male voice: I’m gonna beat your fucking ass you no good whore piece of shit!

Female voice: Give me that goddamn pipe before I cut your throat for you, bitch!

The Audience Views:

As the adults begin to argue, the boy begins to move his drumsticks. He begins to percuss an empty, upside-down, plastic ice cream drum, the tile, and the frying pan turned upside down on the floor. The beat escalates and the boy begins to sing quietly to himself in an attempt to drown out the sound of the argument. As the argument rages, the boy’s voice is amplified for the audience so that it is the predominant sound. In the background, subdued, are the sounds of a physical argument where the female is getting her head pounded against a cupboard and jammed into a sink. Water is heard running. The adult male is shouting something about “Go ahead and take a good long drink! Drink it down!” There is more scuffling and pounding. Occasionally through a doorway in the kitchen the male and female adults are seen grappling with each other. The adult female is seen scratching the adult male’s face with her fingernails and trying to strangle him with her other hand. He’s got his fist wrapped in her hair and he is dragging her through the hallway by it. They enter the kitchen where she grabs a knife off the counter and buries the blade in his abdomen. The boy doesn’t even look in their direction and keeps singing his song and playing the rhythm with his drumsticks. The adult male lets go of the female and slides down the wall stunned, a faraway look in his eyes. She stands over him and spits a mouth full of bloody spit in his face. She takes a Coca-Cola can which has been altered into a crack cocaine pipe and begins smoking it while standing over the man whose face is becoming more and more pale. The faraway look in his eye gets farther and farther away and his chin tilts slightly to his right.

Another door in the kitchen explodes open as a police officer kicks it in. Multiple police officers enter the room, guns drawn. One police officer grabs the female. She begins cursing at him and he swings her onto the floor and handcuffs her. The police officer feels the adult male’s wrist for a pulse then says into his radio, “Send EMS.” While this is happening, two other police officers disappear through the doorway where the man and woman have come from guns drawn. They then return and look at the child who has not stopped drumming or singing. A police officer takes the female out of the apartment while she continues to curse him. Paramedics enter and begin treating the male. They leave the knife in his abdomen and begin chest compressions as they wheel him out of the apartment.

Two police officers stand transfixed by the boy who has not stopped drumming or singing throughout the entire process. One gets on a cell phone. Soon a young female social worker enters the apartment with a lanyard and name tag around her neck which reads Mary, CPS (Child Protective Services). She kneels down in front of the child. His eyes go from a 1000 yard stare to her face. Tears begin streaming down his flat affect face but he does not stop drumming or singing.

The Song the Child Has Been Singing Throughout the Incident is the Reading Rainbow Remix with Levar Burton. The lyrics are below:

One of the best inventions ever was the book. A book lets you zoom through time and space. But don’t bother packing. You can stay in one place. Whether you head north, south, east, or west a book can be your passport. From your own neighborhood to the craters of the moon. In your imagination. When you read a good book you bring the book to life. When you read a good book you’re the actor.

A book lets you zoom through time and space. But don’t bother packing. You can stay in one place. Zoom through time and space. But you don’t have to take my word for it.

There are stories everywhere you look. If you look in the right way. New castles to build. Mysteries to be solved. The answer is in a book.

Believe it or not, this is a book. Big or little it doesn’t matter. It’s what’s inside that counts.

I love maps. All kinds of maps. Each one tells me something different about the world. There is a map for just about any place you’re interested in going. Even the littlest idea can end up as something big. All of these books started out as an idea and look where they ended up!

A book lets you zoom through time and space. But don’t bother packing. You can stay in one place. Zoom through time and space. But you don’t have to take my word for it.

Inventing takes imagination. How about you? If you could invent anything what would it be?

Shoes where you could walk on the walls. Pocket-sized time machine. Technology that made kids in charge of the world. A machine that could clean up my room.

You can be the expert by picking up a book. It’s up to you to pick it off the shelf. You can be the expert by picking up a book. It’s up to you to bring it to life. It has to start here or here. You could bring the book to life. In your imagination. You could be the expert by picking up a book. It’s up to you to bring it to life.

A book lets you zoom to the craters of the moon. You bring the book to life. In your imagination. Zoom through time and space. In your imagination.

There are stories everywhere you look. If you look in the right way. New castles to build. Mysteries to be solved. The answer is in a book. There are stories everywhere you look. If you look in the right way. New castles to build. Mysteries to be solved. You can be the expert. In your imagination.
