One evening in an apartment above a college bar in Madison, I attempted to discuss the contemplative nature of jazz with some new acquaintances who were talking about what was and what wasn't good music. I should have known better. They were dead set on getting drunk and my attempt at conversation was a distraction. While I spoke, their eyes alternated between glassy with boredom and darting between the various bouncing body parts of women dancing in the apartment. They didn't care about the history of jazz in hip hop or anything else I had to say.

In 2003, scientists from the Institute of Astronomy in Cambridge, England, were studying a supermassive black hole located 250 million light years from earth. They discovered that it was producing sound waves. These sound waves translate into B-flat, 57 octaves below middle C on the common household piano. This pitch, inaudible to the human ear, is the sound of the slaughter of light.

Born from the entrails of Malice in Wonderland is the metal movement called TRIIBE. TRIIBE’s current constitution is centered on its founding members: Chris Chaos and Nick RIP. Impeded by disunity and infighting during prior collaborations, the two sought liberation in a cohesive and connective form of musical power. Nick describes: “A tribe is a group of people that live and die together. That is what we are. That is our music.”
